How a Continuous Centrifugal Uses Nickel Screens
In the sugar production process, massecuite — a mixture of sugar crystals and molasses — is fed into the basket of a continuous centrifugal machine. As the basket spins at high speed, centrifugal force throws the massecuite against the basket wall. The nickel micro screen lines the basket, allowing liquid molasses to pass through its precisely sized slots while retaining the solid sugar crystals inside.
The efficiency of this separation — how completely the molasses is removed from the crystals, and how little sugar passes through with the molasses — is determined almost entirely by the screen. Slot width, open area, slot geometry, surface smoothness, and the structural integrity of the screen under centrifugal force all directly affect your recovery rate, molasses purity, and product quality.
2. MASSECUITE GRADES AND SCREEN SELECTION
- A Massecuite
A massecuite produces the highest-quality white sugar crystals and is the first stage of crystallisation. A massecuite centrifugals typically operate with screens in the 0.09mm slot width range, selected for effective molasses removal from large, well-formed crystals. B massecuite is the second crystallisation stage, processing smaller crystals from the mother liquor of A massecuite. B massecuite screens are most commonly specified at 0.09mm slot width with 9% open area in standard configuration. Atulmax B massecuite screens offer 11.5% open area (for throughput) or 0.07mm slots (for lower purity molasses). NK 1100/30 and NK 1500/30 are standard B massecuite screen codes. - C Massecuite
C massecuite is the final crystallisation stage, processing the lowest-purity liquors. C massecuite screens require tighter slot tolerances — typically 0.06mm — to retain the fine crystals that form from low-purity material. Atulmax C massecuite screens offer 7.5% open area (for throughput) or 0.05mm slots (for tighter crystal retention). WK 1150/30 and KC 1100/30 are standard C massecuite screen codes.
3. THE COST OF A WORN SCREEN
What Happens When a Nickel Screen Fails
Nickel screen wear is gradual — which makes it dangerous. As slot widths enlarge from the nominal 0.06mm or 0.09mm toward 0.11mm or 0.12mm, the centrifugal continues to operate and appears to function. But the following is happening to your mill’s economics:
- More fine sugar crystals pass through enlarged slots into the molasses stream — directly reducing recovery
- Molasses purity rises — increasing the load on the next processing stage
- The centrifugal must run longer or faster to achieve the same output — increasing energy and wear
- Screen blinding increases as slot geometry deteriorates — reducing throughput and requiring more frequent wash cycles
A screen that is 30% worn may cost your mill more in lost yield than its replacement value every week of the crushing season. The case for a timely pre-season screen replacement — and for using screens with tighter slot tolerances and harder chrome — is economic, not just mechanical.
4. WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR SCREENS
Signs Your Nickel Screen Needs Replacement
- Molasses purity rising without changes to massecuite quality or machine settings
- Throughput declining for the same machine speed and feed rate
- Increased screen blinding frequency — more frequent wash cycles required
- Visual inspection reveals slot enlargement beyond ±0.01mm of nominal
- Screen surface shows chrome wear, pitting, or areas of exposed nickel
- Screen has processed more than the manufacturer’s recommended tonnage
Do not wait for a screen to fail mid-season. A cracked or broken screen during crushing can damage the centrifugal basket and cause multi-day downtime at the worst possible time. Pre-season replacement of screens that are near their wear limit is always the right economic decision.
5. PROCUREMENT TIMING
India Crushing Season — Screen Procurement Calendar
July–September: The golden procurement window. Mills are between seasons and procurement managers are reviewing maintenance requirements and placing orders for the next campaign. This is the best time to order, compare suppliers, and receive delivery before the season begins.
October–November: Crushing begins in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and early-start states. Urgent replacements possible, but lead times are longer and stock availability is lower.
November–March: Peak crushing season. Mills are running 24/7. Emergency screen orders are common and expensive — both in screen price and production downtime. Avoid this situation with pre-season procurement.
April–June: Post-season maintenance and screen audit. Good time to assess wear on screens removed after the season and plan the next pre-season order.
